Prague (180 - 400m above the sea level) – situated in the centre of Europe - is one of the largest cities on the continent. The city has a population of about 1.21 million and is the cultural, political and economical centre of the Czech Republic.
The so-called ‘golden town' lures with its cityscape characterized by gothic and baroque influences. Prague, where nearly nothing was destroyed during the Second World War, counts today among the most popular tourist attractions in Europe. Since 1992, the old town of Prague is a part of the UNESCO cultural world heritage. The most famous buildings are the castle of Prague with the ‘Veitscathedrale', the ‘Karlsbridge' and old town ring.
The most important sports in Prague and the Czech Republic are ice hockey and soccer but the good results achieved by the Olympic and World Champion Katerina Neumannova have greatly increased interest in Cross-Country Skiing. In December 2007, Prague hosted a FIS Cross-Country World Cup event for the first time. The Tour de Ski Sprint race in 2008 will take place at the exhibition grounds Výstaviště Praha.
